Commissions

All commissions are negotiated for price to determine size and time committment before engagement. I use PRISMACOLOR, LYRA and all weights of graphite 6h-7b on Cold Press surfaced Crescent Illustration Board. I have been doing this for more than 30 years and no works show signs of deterioration. The rigid surface provides for multiple matting layers under glass while maintaining image integrity that is clumsy with oft used Bristol Paper (which is essentially cold press without the board). I always request several photos to work from and never attempt to reproduce them precisely. I most often focus on a singular photo, but a selection sharpens perspective that allows for artistic liberty and invites more than one to the composition.

Acceptance and Delivery

Finished portraits are photographed and submitted for review before acceptance. A downpayment is required but will be returned upon rejection...none so far. Delivery of work takes place per actual cost of shipping and handling or may be picked up at my studio. To say that I stand behind my work is a trite guarantee. Every composition is quite personal for me. Simply "acceptable" is unacceptable. Conversation before engagement is not a suggestion, it is prerequisite. Commissions begin at $500 for 16"x20" Most common are 20"x30" which range from $1,000 - $1,750. The more faces, the more detail, the more time. Family portraits take a lot of time, and I prefer more than one photo of each face I draw. It allows me to close my eyes now and then. Perspective is otherwise difficult for me. Both eyes or none, but never just one. It's all about perspective. That is not to say I won't do something with your favorite photo. Indeed it is the most common request. But it requires a lot of squinting.
